Property tax (kiinteistövero) is an annual tax paid by the owner of the property, that is the plot and the building. In 2026 the property tax rate on a permanent home is at least 0,41 % and at most 1,00 %, and your own municipality decides where in this range it lands. The basis for the tax bill is the property’s taxable value calculated by the Tax Administration, not the purchase price, so the tax is usually clearly smaller than you would think from the percentage and the purchase price alone.
This applies to detached houses and other properties. If you buy a housing-company apartment, that is an apartment in a block or terraced house, you do not pay property tax yourself: the housing company pays it and it is included in the maintenance charge (hoitovastike). For a detached-house buyer, property tax is a separate monthly cost worth including in your housing costs alongside the loan and upkeep.
Check the municipality’s own rate and the home’s taxable value, and you get the real euro amount. The Tax Administration sends a property tax decision every year, and the tax due dates are usually from late summer to autumn. For a new owner, the tax starts running from the year after, once you have been the owner at the start of the year.
