Most PCB-containing double-glazed units are from about 1965 to 1973, while imported organically sealed units can date up to 1980. Metal-sealed spacer profiles do not contain PCB.
If a unit cannot be dated, it is generally assumed to contain PCB until shown otherwise.
PCB cannot be seen or smelled. It is detected by measuring the indoor air or analysing the material, and that is the only reliable way to know the level.
If the home was built or renovated between 1950 and 1977, mark the joints and double-glazed units as a build-year risk to investigate before you price any replacement.
