Matrikkel (cadastre)

The matrikkel is Norway’s official register of real property. It describes what the property is: boundaries, area, address, and buildings. Every property has a unique land and title number, gnr/bnr (gårdsnummer and bruksnummer), that identifies it unambiguously. The matrikkel tells you what the property is, while the land register (grunnboken) tells you who owns it and which encumbrances rest on it, and the two registers are used together when a home is sold and transferred. As a buyer, you meet gnr/bnr in the sales prospectus, the deed, and on maps, so check that the number matches the home you are actually buying, especially with plots, sections, or recent subdivisions.
